January Week 4: GOAL SETTING

“All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.”

– Orison Swett Marden

At Canadian Black Belt Academy Mississauga, we’re focusing on goal setting and how it applies to success in Karate and beyond. This week’s example is breaking a board with a side kick—a goal that takes practice, focus, and determination.

First, hone your technique. A side kick isn’t just about kicking—it’s about using your whole body to deliver power. Your instructors and classmates are here to guide you, just like a strong support system helps you stay on track toward your goals. Confidence comes next. Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve. Visualize kicking through the board—mentally rehearsing success builds the foundation for real achievement.

Next, focus intensely. Look directly at the center of the board and stay committed to the task at hand. Distractions can throw off your aim and reduce your strength. Lastly, success requires speed and decisive action. Set your plan, act quickly, and follow through with confidence.

Ask yourself:

  1. What’s one goal you’d like to accomplish in Karate?
  2. How can breaking big goals into smaller steps help you succeed?
  3. Who can you encourage to reach their goals?

Together, let’s build confidence, focus, and perseverance as we kick our way to success—both in Karate and life!
